Art + Engineering = Genius

Monday 19 January 2015

A combination of art and engineering, creativity and craft make up the visually outstanding work by Bedford artist, Alex Chinneck.

Speaking exclusively to Bedford College students at the town’s own riverside South Bank Arts Centre, Alex explained the technology behind his sliding, melting, floating and upside down buildings.

They have attracted international acclaim but, said Alex, the ideas only became a reality with the help of his structural engineer, an ex Sharnbrook School student – whose father, like Alex’s mother Sharon, worked at Bedford College.

Alex was a student of Bedford Modern School and is still in touch with the inspiring art teacher who led him on the road to his extraordinary career.

Alex gave the Bedford College students some exclusive glimpses of works in the pipeline which are planned for 2015 and beyond at the presentation on Wednesday 14th January.

Said one member of the audience,: “Alex explained his work with clarity and enthusiasm while at the same time getting across the huge challenges sometimes faced in turning a great idea into a reality. He is an inspiration.”

Said his mum Sharon: “Both he and his brother were very good at maths at school. Oliver is now an accountant and Alex an artist.”

‘A’ students in both cases.
