Winning water work

Art student Nicola Westcar has her work on permanent display in the gardens at the prestigious St Bede’s 55+ independent living centre, in Bromham Road, Bedford.

The fishpond mosaic was designed by Nicola, aged 30, as part of a competition opened to Bedford College students.

St Bede’s resident Jean Watt, who was one of the judges, said: “We chose Nicola’s design because there is a large Catholic population in Bedford and we made the connection of the fishpond with the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with fish and bread.”

Nicola, from Biggleswade, said: “I really enjoyed working on this project and I’m so proud my design was selected. It was lovely to be invited along to this opening event to meet the scheme’s residents and hear some of the stories they have to tell.”
